KEFALONIA > OVERVIEW

Kefalonia Greek Islands Ionian Greece

Kefalonia is the larger and most alpine island of the Eptanisa. It is located at the north of Zakynthos, at the south of Lefkada and opposite the entrance of the Patraikos Gulf. It is a mountainous island as a large part of it, is covered by the Ainos Mountain.

Furthermore, Ithaka is located close to its north eastern shore, the island connected to the quests of Odysseus. The two islands constitute the Prefecture of Kefalonia - Ithaca, with its capital located at Argostoli.

Argostoli is located in the south part of Kefalonia and is a relatively new city, as it was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953. Today it is a modern city that preserves the traditional element as the new buildings has been built in the Eptanisa architectural style. The city is built amphitheatrically with a view to the Koutavos lagoon. Here is also the largest harbour of the island, considered to be one of the safest harbours in the world.

The island is famous for its beautiful beaches and its clear waters. The beach of Myrtos at the north-western side of the island has been voted 11 times as the best beach in Greece and has entered the list of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Xi beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean having the unique red argillaceous sand. Some other beautiful beaches are Karavomylos, Agia Efimia, Skala, Poros, Assos and Platis Gialos.
