Nea Moni (New Abbey)

Nea Moni was built in the 11th century (around 1042-1056) and was dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

In the north-western department of the Abbey there exists an imposing defensive tower. All of Monastery’s departments are surrounded by tall stone walls. The monastery includes the main temple, two smaller churches, the room where monks dined, their cells and underground tanks created for the storage of water.

Metropolitan Temple

The Cathedral of Chios (Saint Viktores) is very dominant in the centre of the city. The Genouatic temple was burn by their Turks, at the 1822 slaughter.

It was built again in basilica architecture and was declared as the Cathedral temple of Chios in 1838, and then it was again destroyed, at the horrible earthquake 1881 that flattened the island and was built again in 1888, in Byzantine architecture. Inside the temple one can admire particularly the chancel screen, made in Russian style, as well as other precious objects.
