Travel Guide Corfu Island Ionian Greece
CORFU > OVERVIEW

Corfu is the northernmost island of the Ionian Islands and the westernmost part of Greece. It is located at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea close to the mainland coasts. Corfu is the most popular island in the Ionian Sea; it is rich in natural beauty also, it has a great cultural heritage and a modern tourism infrastructure.
The city of Corfu is the island’s capital, influenced by the Venetians, the English and the French. It is a cosmopolitan city that has a sense of nobility, with its main sights being that of the big square of Spianada which is the largest in Balkans, the Old and New Fortress, the Town Hall (San Tziakomo Theatre), Kanoni, Mon Repo, the Museums of Byzantine and Post Byzantine History. The most famous sight is the islet, the notable Pontikonisi, facing Kanoni, which is connected through a small strip of land on which the Church of Panagia of Vlaherna is located.
The island has many beautiful beaches, most popular of which, are the sandy beaches in the west part of the island like the cosmopolitan Glyfada, Agios Gordios, the quiet beach of Kontogialos, Gialiskari and an alternative choice would be Myrtiotissa.
Heading north, beaches from Kassiopi to the Nisaki are small and pebbled surrounded by greenery. From Aharavi to Sidari beach and from Agios Stefano to Agios Georgios of Pagon one could find some large seaside resorts. Sidari with its sculptured rocks and Paleokastritsa with its green waters and caves are unique exceptions. Some of the beaches in the south are: Megas Horos, Halikounas, Agios Georgios Argyradon they are quiet, providing an alternative way of taking vacation.
On this cosmopolitan island one can combine relaxation and a rich nightlife.
