SYROS > ARCHAEOLOGY
Kastri Acropolis
In Kastri traces of human presence show that the region was extensively inhabited during different historical periods. The mountain was colonized in the prehistoric period. This has been proven by findings such as shells etc. However, the most significant evidence of inhabitation is the semicircular wall that was found on the top of the mountain.
The discoveries from the citadel are numerous including large earthen pitharia (jars) with engraved decoration, containers and utensils of daily use. In the citadel there were ceramic and metal workshops. From the discoveries of the citadel the most valuable piece is the silver circlet, half a metre in length, with dotted decoration of rosettes and animals.
Many of the discoveries are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens as well as in the Museum of Ermoupolis. Copies of the discoveries can be seen in the Copies of Cycladic Art Museum of Ermoupolis.
Halandianis Necropolis
On the slope opposite the Kastri citadel the archaeologist Tsountas discovered and excavated a very large necropolis with 600 graves. The excavations brought to light, apart from the graves, the foundations of residences, remains of walls, tomb decorations of metal and clay, vessels, jewels, weapons of volcanic glass and domestic utensils.
It is located in the north western part of Syros and is of the early Cycladic culture of Syros - Kerou dating to roughly the 3rd millennium BC.
