Travel Guide Lasithi Crete Island Greece

LASITHI > OVERVIEW

Agios Nikolaos Lasithi Crete Greek Islands Greece

Lassithi is the easternmost prefecture on the island of Crete and is surrounded by sea on three sides; to the north is the Cretan Sea, to the east the Ikaria Sea and to the south the Libyan Sea. The Prefecture of Heraklion is to the west and the Dikti mountain range creates a natural border. The capital is Agios Nikolaos on the north coast. The prefecture has many resort areas and is a popular destination for visitors.

The origin of the name of Lassithi has many variations, but the two most likely are: La Sitti, as recorded by Paul Favre during Venetian times and the other is the ancient Greek word lasios, which means overgrown area.
