Folklore Museum

Skopelos has a brilliant cultural heritage. The rich material of this cultural heritage has been gathered in the Folklore Museum of Skopelos so as to highlight the cultural past and maintain the live identity of the place.

The Folklore Museum of Skopelos was founded in 1991 by the Giannios Nikolaidis family. It opened in 1993 in an old mansion that was built in 1795 and stood up to 1965 when it suffered serious damage from earthquakes. In 1971, it was restored maintaining all the traditional features of the settlement. The configuration of the Folklore Museum was assigned to the interior decorator, S. Zanos and the scientific documentation of the collections was undertaken by Professor Katerina Korre-Zografos.

The ground floor houses the history, the traditions and customs of Skopelos. On the first floor there is the traditional costume collection. Collections are supplemented by pictures, embroideries, black and white photographs, many of which were donated by the Nikolaidis family and the Geogaras family collection of fine embroideries, objects related to the handicrafts and the traditional craftsmen of the island.

On the second floor there is the Rodios family ceramic collection. The collections are complimented by the amazing miniature ships built by Triantafyllos Bountalas. The Glossa Folklore Museum is a new addition offering insight to the cultural heritage of the island.

Photo Gallery Centre

Skopelos’ Photographic Centre opened in 1996 in collaboration with the Elysse Museum of Lucerne and ICP of New York with the aim of organizing a summer festivals of photography. During the festival, photographs are exhibited from Greek and international photographers. There are some photography seminars organized during the festival. Telephone: 24240 24121.
