The monastery of Evagelistria is located 4km north from the town. It was built in 1794 and is of great historic importance for Skiathos as here the first Greek flag with the white cross in blue background, was manufactured and blessed. It is the place where in 1807 Philics, Theodoros Kolokotronis, Giannis Stathas and Nikotsaras took an oath.
The Monastery of Panagia Kounistra
The Monastery of Panagia(Virgin Mary) Kounistra is 8km far from town and it is considered to be the patron saint of Skiathos. It was built on the 17th century and was dedicated to Esodia of Theotokos. According to tradition, the icon of Virgin Mary was found hanging and moving on a pine. That’s where it took its name.
The Monastery of Panagia Kehria
The monastery of Virgin Mary Kehria is built on a bulk, right above the bay that has the same name. It is located in the northwest part of the island, 8km far from the town of Skiathos. It was built in the 18th century. It is an isolated monastery, worth visiting for the ecclesiastic heirlooms and its glorious outlook over the coast.
