The town of Thassos also called Limenas by the locals, is the capital and the island’s main port. It is located in the north-eastern side of Thassos and concentrates the majority of the population.
It is also the commercial and administrative capital, since it accommodates the majority of public services many hotels, shops and restaurants. It’s worth visiting Thassos’ ancient agora, ancient theatre, acropolis and the archaeological museum. Furthermore, one can admire lots of old churches like Agios Nicolaos and the monastery of Batopedi located in the port and is the trademark of Thassos. At a small distance, there you can find the beautiful beaches of Macriammos, Glifada, Papalimani, Nysteri and the beach of Pagi.
Prinos is the biggest village on the western part of Thassos and is one of the most important areas for the island’s economy, due to the oil fields that have been found there.
Tourist infrastructure is getting better every year so as to satisfy all needs. There are hotels and rooms for rent that can provide whatever you may need.
It’s worth visiting Dasillio of Prinos, the church of Agios Panteleimonas as well as the traditional village Kazabiti, one of the most graphic villages of Thassos with old mansions and churches located 4km from Prinos village.
Limenaria is the second biggest town of the island developed at the end of 19th century. The area became known due to its mines working since 1903. Limenaria and the village of Kalivia, approach in total the capital’s population.
In the area there are hotels and rooms for rent while on the coastal road you can find taverns, cafes and shops. Nearby are Metallia beach, Limenaria beach and that of Tripiti.
This small traditional village is located 9km from the capital and was named after the very old church of Panagia located in the area. The village is famous for the chapels, the delicious traditional sweets; the strong local tsipouro (arrack) and the beautiful beach of Chrisi Ammoudia located close by. In the area there are lots of hotels, rooms for rent and camping places.
Potamia village is located at the south-east of the capital. It is built on the foothills of mountain Ipsario which is the tallest mountain of Thassos. It was named after the numerous rivers (potamia) that drove through the village. The waters, the stoned houses with the wooden ceilings and the dense vegetation compose a magic picture.
Finally, it is worth visiting the museum of the famous sculptor Polignotos Vagis established in the village in his honour.
