HISTORY
The first known inhabitants were Kares. Later the island was populated by Thracians. Samothrace was an important religious centre, respected and protected even till the end of the 4th century A.D. where Christianity had become firmly established.
Between 491 and 480 B.C. Samothrace surrendered to the Persians.
Samothrace became a member of the first Athenian alliance in 477 B.C.
After finishing the Peloponnesian war the Spartans conquered Samothrace.
The island became a part of the Egyptian Empire after Thrace was conquered by the Ptolemies.
It was still significantly populated during Byzantine times. However, after the 8th century, Slavs and Saracens often performed raids on the island, which resulted in the population’s reduction.
On September 1st, 1821 the Turks landed on Samothrace plundered and completely destroyed the island.
The Greek fleet liberated Samothrace in 1912 (October 19, 1912), and its annexation to Greece was ratified in February of 1914.
