HISTORY
Limnos was inhabited for the first time in 1000 B.C. from Pelasgians. During this period of time the two well known ancient cities Ifaistia and Myrina were founded and prospered economically and culturally.
In 512 B.C. Limnos became a member of the Athenian Alliance, while in 168 B.C. it came under the Roman control.
During the Byzantium years the island’s harbour was a safe shelter for the Emperor’s fleet. In 1204, Venetians conquered Limnos.
In the beginning of the 15th century, Turks besieged Limnos. At one of their attacks, residents were able to fight back with the help of the heroine, Maroula, at least for a while. Finally, the Turks dominated the island. Limnos finally became an official part of Greece in 1912.
