The island has a specific type of medieval town planning that was developed after a specific plan expressing the feudalistic way of ruling during the years of Venetian occupation, where the basic city planning structure was formed.

In Lefkada Province there are two settlements officially declared traditional and are protected by law. The one or two storied houses are widely known for their earthquake-proof structures and their special features, such as the double doors and the casements, the exterior stone staircase, the characteristic balcony, “the pontzo”, at the top of the stairs and the arced domes leading to the basement, with the construction date carved on them.
