The castle of Aghia Mavra

The castle of Aghia Mavra is located at the entrance of the island. It is one of the most imposing medieval buildings of Greece, representing the fortification art of this period.

It was built around 1300 A.D. from the Frank leader, Ioannis Orsinis. The castle was protecting the island’s capital, as it was the most important defensive armouring against Pirates and other enemies, from the first decade of 1300 since 1684, when it was conquered by the Turks.

Nirikos

Nirikos is 2 km from the town at the east part of it, after the olive grove, at the village Kalligoni. The area has been declared an archaeological site, as there the ancient town of Lefkada, called Nirikos, was located.

Those ruins of Ancient Lefkada’s settlement date back from the Archaic to Roman times. Furthermore, there are two cemeteries of the ancient town, some monuments and also construction ruins, like graves, farmhouses, and harbour facilities.
