Hora the capital of Kythira is located in the south of the island on a hill overlooking the Cretan Sea, a very pretty town that has combined Venetian and Cycladic architecture.
The Venetian Castle built high on a rock dominated the town. The castle was built around 1503 and within its walls are many preserved Venetian buildings and Byzantium churches.
The naturally shaped harbour of the town is located by the resort village of Kapsali close by.
The village of Agia Pelagia is located 28 km north east of Hora and has the second harbour of the island. In recent years it had become a popular resort area for visitors to the island.
There are a few beaches close by: Fyri Ammos with its red sand beach, Lorentzou beach is popular with nudists and Lagadas beach that leads to the Paleohoras gorge.
The coastal village of Avlemonas is located 26 km east of Hora. There is a small medieval castle overlooking its small harbour. There s a small beach and some small coves.
The resort village of Potamos, meaning river, had been known as The Dame of the Village referring to the church of the Ilariotissas Madona. The main square is paved and shaded by pine trees and surrounded with traditional mansions. Close by is Agia Pelagia Beach.
The picturesque coastal village of Kapsali is located 3 km from Hora. A Venetian castle of Hora overlooks its secure natural harbour. The village offers an organised beach.
Livadi is located in the centre of a verdant meadow 4 km from Hora. The village reflects elements of English architecture. The beaches of Fyri Ammos and Kombonada are close by.
