Livadia

Livadia Tilos Dodecanese Greek Islands Greece

It is a traditional settlement and the island’s current port. Its position is first mentioned in 1807 and its settlement in the 30s. Built between the fertile valley and the picturesque cove, it preserves many elements of the traditional Dodecanese architecture, with several stone houses and the characteristic atmosphere of the Greek islands. The quite lengthy pebbled beach with the shade-providing trees begins inside the settlement and reaches the medieval port of Agios Stefanos on the east side of the cove. Next to the central port one can see the unique building of the Police Station which was built during the Italian occupation. Many elderly women are still in the habit of wearing their traditional costumes, especially on Sundays.

Megalo Horio

Megalo Horio Tilos Dodecanese Greek Islands Greece

Megalo Horio has been the capital of Tilos ever since antiquity. Until the early 18th century the whole population resided within the Castle and around its walls on the mountain’s slope. The village has now been moved to the foot of the mountain, built amphitheatrically, while the Castle still dominates the top of the mountain. Among the stone houses, remains of the Hellenistic walls are visible, while uphill on the way to the Castle one can see the ruins of the old village. The settlement preserves many elements of traditional architecture. Most characteristic are the narrow alleys, close-knit building, white-washed walls and blue windows adorned with colourful flowers.

Mikro Horio

Mikro Horio Tilos Dodecanese Greek Islands Greece

Mikro Horio is one of the settlements of Tilos classified as traditional. It is an abandoned village mentioned for the first time in a document of 1661, although the chapels of the Castle and their murals reveal that it must have been inhabited since the 15th century. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the village was organized as a settlement in the 15th century by the Knights, because of the amphitheatric arrangement of the houses around the spring and the pattern of the roads.
