ARCHITECTURE

The architecture of Nisyros follows the morphological and typological characteristics of the architecture of the Dodecanese.

The typology of the dwelling in its traditional settlements ranges from the popular, small house to the spacious, urban mansion with neoclassical elements. It usually has two storeys, with a multifunctional room on the ground floor for food preparation and storage.

In the yards of many houses, as well as in public squares, we encounter exquisite pebbled floors with a rich variety of themes, like ornamental motifs (spirals, helices, waves) or depictions from nature. In the largest, central squares of the settlements, we come across beautiful pebbled areas constructed by local craftsmen or from neighbouring islands (mainly Symi).

The few but densely built settlements of Nisyros have typical Dodecanese characteristics: dense and continuous residential areas with interesting squares or small expansions which take advantage of the space limitations and actually become the continuation of everyday life in the interior of the houses.
