The Archaeological Museum of Syros is one of the oldest museums in Greece and the Cyclades. It was founded in 1834 and is housed in the Dimarhiako Palace of Ermoupolis.
In its three rooms are exhibited discoveries of the neoclassical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The most interesting collection is that of the Early Cycladic discoveries from the Halandriani, the Kastri areas and from other Cycladic islands. Of particular interest is the black granite Egyptian statue of the priest, Anhapi, and is dated from the 730 BC, 22nd dynasty.
The Industrial Museum is housed in the three buildings that have been donated by the Municipality of Ermoupolis and these are: The Hromatourgeio Katsimanti, the Skagiopoieio Anerousis and the Kornilaki Tannery.
The collection of machinery in the industrial museum includes about 300 objects of the 19th and 20 centuries. In this Museum one can see a unique collection of equipment for tanning, machinery, textiles, typography, shipbuilding, doughnut production, food packing etc.
Within the rooms of the Intellectual Centre Ermoupolis the Museum of Copies Cycladic of Art is to be found. The exhibits of the Museum are copies of the authentic items housed in the Goulandri Museum in Athens. It was founded in 1993.
There are educational programmes in the museum to extend the knowledge of the important Cycladic of Culture of the 3rd millennium BC that is considered as one of the top five in the world.
The Historical Archive of the Cyclades is housed on the first floor of Ladopoulou Palace. A wealth of information is contained within the archives which date from 1821.
The rare and precious archive material records important historical aspects of Ermoupolis constituting important material for the history of the newer Greek State, to which Ermoupoli was a protagonist city. The classification of the Historical Achive began in 1977- 78 and is available for researchers.
M. Vamvakari Museum was founded in 1995 and is located in the centre of Ano Syros. Here, you can see the personal belongings of a great troubadour, who was born in Ano Syros in 1905 and passed away in the early years of his life.
The museum exhibits his photographs and old belongings, his passport and identity card, his clothes and shoes, handwritten texts and verses, his ring, watch and other personal items that were donated by his family to be exhibited in the museum that is named after him.
