During excavations in 1983 a cemetery came to light that presented particular historical interest. The existence of graves of various types and from different periods witness that the cemetery was used for a long period from about the 8th century BC up to the 3rd century BC; the most significant discovery was the unique common grave that has been found in the Aegean and is dated to the late geometric period.
Nowadays the areas functions as an archaeological park. Visitors can see the many interesting discoveries as well as photographs from older and more recent excavations in its exhibition hall.
The Kastro was built by Sanoudo, the Venetian of Duke of Naxos in the 13th century on top of remnants of three ancient temples and two temples of the Classical period of the ancient city. Only a small section of the ancient temple of Athina remains on the top of the hill. Next to its foundations an early Cycladic settlement was revealed.
On the hill of Agios Anna, on the coastal road, the Asklipiou, the temple of medicine, was revealed. It is an open air temple that is placed chronologically in the 4th century BC. In the same region are the ruins of an ancient temple that was dedicated to Pythio Apollo.
North east of Paroikias another important temple was located, where Apollo of Dilios, Lito and Atremi were worshipped. Little remains of the temple of the 6th century BC other than some of its foundations. In the east and on top of the hill there is the church of the Prophet Elia, where there was a temple of Elithias, Aphrodite and Zeus in ancient times of which very little remains today.
