AMORGOS > HISTORY

HISTORY History of Amorgos Cyclades Greek Island Greece

In olden times Amorgos was called Patagi or Platagi, Pagkali, Psychia and Karkisia. In ancient times, the island was made up of three cities: Minoa, Aigiali and Arkesini. Each city had its own currency. In the Byzantine years Amorgos belonged to the province of Islands with Rhodes as its capital, and then, along with the islands of Paros and Siphnos, they constituted the Episkopi, which in 1803 was linked with Paronaxia.

In the 3rd millenium B.C. the Cycladic culture leaves its traces with the well-known figurines. The Mycinian culture follows. Afterwards it becomes colonised by the people of Milisios of Mikra Asia and Naxos and Amorgos participates in the first Athenian Alliance.

In 1204 after the conquering of Constantinople by the Franks, Amorgos came under the control of the Venetians, Andrea and Ieremia Gkyzi.

Amorgos passed through the hands of many different conquerors until 1447 when it constituted part of the sovereignty of Astypalaia.

Finally Amorgos acquired her freedom in the 19th century.
