Matala

Matala is located 66 km southwest of Heraklion on the coast of the Libyan Sea. During the 1960s and 70s, it was popular with Hippies, who camped in the many caves overlooking the sandy beach.

Ammoudara

The resort of Ammoudara is a suburb of Heraklion, only 5 km from the town centre, with a long sandy beach. The popular resort offers a plethora of day and night activities.

Agia Pelagia

Agia Pelagia is a seaside village resort located 20 km from Heraklion. The village has a narrow sandy beach and is contained within a well-protected cove.

Lygaria

Lygaria is a cove just before Agia Pelagia with a smaller protected pebble beach.

Fodele

The seaside village of Fodele is located 28 km west of Heraklion. The main village is in a green environment with a small stream running through it. The internationally acclaimed artist El Greco was born here. The sandy beach is well-organised and has crystal clear waters.

Stalida

The resort of Stalis is located 33 km from Heraklion and between the resorts of Hersonissos and Malia. The large sandy beach is well-organised and offers a variety of sea sports and activities.

Kokkini Hani

The resort of Kokkini Hani is just 12 km east of Heraklion. The popular sandy beach is well-organised and offers a variety of sea sports and activities.

Tsoutsouros

The fishing village of Tsoutsouras is located on the south coast overlooking the Libyan Sea, 85 km from Heraklion. The sandy beach is not organised, but is a very popular destination of the Cretans.
