Travelling by ferry: A complete travel guide for your ferry booking

Is there a ferry from Piraeus to Crete?

There are usually 2 daily departures from the main port of Piraeus-Crete, Heraklion and at least 1 ferry from Piraeus-Crete, Chania and vice versa. The ferries from Piraeus to Crete and back usually depart around 9 pm and arrive approx. at 6 am. During the summer, Christmas and Easter time, daytime ferries are also added to the schedule.
The ferry journey from Piraeus to Crete typically takes around 8-9 hours. Although it is always recommended to reconfirm the departure time, these are perhaps the steadiest ferry routes in Greece and delays and cancellations rarely occur.
For overnight trips, it's advisable to book a cabin for added comfort and privacy. If you choose a daytime ferry, it's recommended to opt for a conventional ferry rather than a high-speed one. High-speed ferries are ideal for shorter routes, such as from Piraeus or Heraklion to the in between islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Ios and Paros. Booking a high-speed ferry for the entire Piraeus to Crete route can be in a bumpy ride, especially on windy days. Conventional ferries however provide a smoother travel experience, even in windy conditions, making them a preferable choice for the longer Piraeus to Crete route.
The ferry departures from the mainland port of Piraeus are daily with 2-4 ferries a day depending on the season. Ferry connections from and to other islands like Crete, Heraklion-Santorini, Athinios, Crete, Heraklion-Mykonos, Crete, Heraklion-Syros and Crete, Heraklion-Paros, Parikia are daily in summertime (June-September) but usually stop running between October-May. The ferries from Crete (Heraklion and Sitia) to the Dodecanese islands (Kasos, Karpathos and Rhodes) are weekly.
Yes, you will find that most ferry operators and ferries can transport private vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, minibuses, campers, caravans, boat trailers and baggage trailers and bookings are possible through our platform. However, some ferries have limited garage space and vehicles exceeding 6m in length may require approval from the ferry company. If you are traveling with a larger vehicle and cannot book your tickets online, feel free to ask for our help with your booking. Please note that, if your vehicle is not registered as a private vehicle, you should contact the cargo department of the ferry company directly as the booking process for trucks and commercial vehicles is completely different.
Yes, all ferry companies allow pets on board but certain regulations apply. You have to specify that you are travelling with your pet at the time of booking and provide a valid pet passport to board the ferry. For more information about travelling by ferry with a pet, please visit our Pets on Board page.
The conventional ferries offer a range of accommodation categories from deck, numbered seats, inside cabins, outside cabins and luxury cabins. For daytime journeys, a numbered seat is a comfortable and affordable option for your ferry trip. If you plan to travel with the overnight ferry, a cabin is advisable. Depending on your group size, you can book a whole (private) single, double, 3-bed or 4-bed cabin, but booking just a bed in a shared cabin is also possible. The high speed ferries to the islands offer numbered seats only and you can choose between Economy, Business and VIP class depending on your budget.
