The temple of Artemis

Archaeology of Ikaria East Aegean Greek Islands Greece

The temple of Ikarian Artemis (Diana) was discovered in 1983 by the Greek archaeologist Leontas Politis. In that region a building of dimensions 10 x 4 was found that had been built on a huge armoured base necessary as the ground of the region was unstable. Only ten metres far from that particular area a second smaller building which probably accommodated the statue of Artemis, was found.

Among other objects, there were found a well-processed crater from Rhodes that depicts a chamois, a pin with a lion’s head on it, a beautiful head of statue of the Hellenistic era, as well as two bodies of feminine statues, one of the 5th century B.C. and the other of the 2nd century B.C.
