AREAS

Chora

Chora Amorgos Cyclades Greek Islands Greece

It is the capital city of the island, built in the centre of the island in the southeast part of Profitis Ilias, between small hills, unseen from the sea, protecting it from pirates.

Chora is one of the most beautiful cities in the Cyclades, making it, undeniably, the centre of activity on the island. Whitewashed pavements, picturesque square-shaped white houses that unfold round the Medieval Castle with its Venetian Tower, the masterly made arches, the forty churches, scattered in various points of the city, alleyways embellished with flowerpots and the windmills at the top of the hill create an enchanting picture of a medieval fortified city stirring the interest of every visitor.

Aigiali

Aigiali Amorgos Cyclades Greek Islands Greece

Aigiali is located in the northern utmost part of Amorgos and is the second harbour of the island. The beautiful villages Tholaria, Lagadas and Potamos are built amphitheatrically in the bay of the harbour and give a unique beauty to the region of Aigialis. The fourth village, Ormos is built near the sea and has the best beach on the island.

Katapola

Katapola Amorgos Cyclades Greek Islands Greece

Katapola constitutes one of the biggest natural harbours in the Aegean. It is located 5 km south west of Chora. It is a beautiful and particularly graphic harbour, surrounded by three settlements: Katapola, Rachidi and Xylokeratidi. It is worth a visit to the ruins of the important ancient city of Minoa and the picturesque church of the Virgin Mary Katapoliani, that was built on the site of the ancient temple of Apollo.

Arkesini

Arkesini Amorgos Cyclades Greek Islands Greece

Arkesini is a beautiful village located in the southern part of the island, on the Lower Side, as the locals call it. The other villages of the Lower Side are Leykes, Kamari, Kolofana and Broytsi. The landscape here is different from the northern side with its wild rocks and sparse vegetation. Fertile valleys exist with fruit trees and the ground is flat. In the area of Kastri the ruins of one of the biggest cities on the island, ancient Arkesinis, are to be found.
