KYTHIRA > ARCHITECTURE

Architecture of Kythira Greek Islands Greece

The architecture of Kythira is a combination of styles from the traditional architecture of the Eptanisia, Cyclades and the Peloponnese added to which are the Venetian elements harmonising the whole. Examples have been well maintained and in the areas of Pitsinades and lower Hora Mylopotamou whole settlements can be seen.

In Hora, the capital of Kythira, there are three distinct types of home: mansions, suburban and folk, all characterised with elements of Venetian and Eptanisia architecture. In the villages of Livadi and Fratsia are the countryside mansions with their external staircases with stone or wooden banisters adorned with flowers and a variety of chimney stacks.

Generally the architecture is influenced by the need for protection as the island was subjected to frequent attacks therefore giving the appearance of a defensive character.
